There was something slightly unnerving about pop songs playing in the middle of a morgue. Dead bodies lined the walls in icy metal chambers, and corpses were being cut into in the middle of the room. Meanwhile, the chart’s top forty played on in the background.

Keogan had not yet fulfilled his suspension when Detectives Black and Hunter had visited the morgue last time, and so he had not met the medical examiner who was working alongside them on this case. The younger man looked more and more alarmed as they drew closer to the heavy doors separating the morgue from the rest of the hospital basement, as Lady Gaga songs blared loudly behind them.

Cieran, who had met with the medical examiner the day before, was not surprised in the slightest.

Detective Black pushed the door open, just wide enough to poke his head through so that he wouldn’t catch the man in the middle of an autopsy again, and chapped loudly on the door.

This time, at least, the medical examiner was not dressed in surgical scrubs, and instead was bobbing his head along to the music while he filled out reports at a desk in the corner of the room.

“Doctor August!” Detective Black called out, loud enough to be heard over the music.

The man seemed surprised at his guest, but not irritated. He waved for Cieran to enter the room, turning down his music but not shutting it off completely.

“Hey,” he shouted in response, “come on in!”

Cieran stepped into the room, a cautious-looking Detective Keogan following behind.

“I’m sorry to bother you while you’re at work again,” Detective Black began, “but I was wondering if you happened to have finished either of the autopsy reports or the tox screen. I don’t need everything at the moment, but those would really help me out.”

“Sorry, man,” the doctor said, “I’ve been swamped here, so neither autopsy has been finished just yet. But, I can pretty much definitively say that MacDonald passed away from a heart attack.”

There was a stack of papers on Doctor August’s desk several inches thick, from which the medical examiner picked up a paper from the top, starting to write on that one too. If that was something that the man had to work his way through, then Cieran could hardly blame him for pushing the autopsies till later.

Still, Detective Black felt a twinge of disappointment. “Okay,” he said, “thank you.”

Cieran went to leave the man to his work, slipping back through the door, when he heard Doctor August call out again.

“Oh! Wait, I did find time to finish that tox screen,” the doctor announced, starting to search frantically through his desk. Apparently, though, the man did not keep his desk organized, something that Detective Black didn’t find surprising in the slightest, because the man was struggling to find it. “I was going to send it over when I finished the reports, but since you’re here, I can go over it with you now.”

It took another minute or two of searching
